What is Earth Education?

Earth education is the process of helping people build an understanding of, appreciation for, and a harmony with the earth and its life by:

  • Understanding the major ecological systems and communities of the planet (including the flow of energy in the environment, the cycling of materials of life, the inter-relationships amoung all living things and the changes that transform things through time)
  • Developing deep and long lasting emotional attachments to the earth and it's life
  • Reducing their impact on the earth

All our programmes and activities are designed to help achieve this goal.

The Institute for Earth Education

The Institute for Earth Education is a not-for-profit, volunteer organisation made up of an international network of individuals and member organisations. We believe that a special kind of education - EARTH EDUCATION - can make a significant difference in the health of our planet.

The Institute...

  • Develops and disseminates Earth Education programmes and activites;
  • Conducts workshops for teachers, leaders and others involved in educating people about environmental problems;
  • Has a range of books and programme materials available from the mail order catalogue;
  • Publishes various journals and newsletter;
  • Supports a network of Major and local Branches.

Our major work is to design and develop specific educational programmes that change people's view of our home, the planet earth, and the way we interact with it.

The UK Major Branch

Consists of individual and corporate Members who support the work of the institute both in the UK and internationally.

Some members form Local Branches which act as a focus for shared interest, plus the development and implementation of Earth Education programmes. Contact the UK Office for details of your nearest branch.

Associates are members who volunteer to take on all the usual tasks involved in running any voluntary organisation.

If you share our beliefs, find out how to become a member. We think you'll find many kindred spirits in our growing community of earth educators.

Finance and Legal Status

The institute derives its income from membership subscriptions, workshop and conference fees, sales of publication and programme materials and donations. It receives no direct funding from central or local government or from industrial or commercial sponsers. The UK branch of the Institute operates under the auspices of a registered charity - The UK Trust for Earth Education (reg. no: 1017462).
